For this visa’s purposes, who qualifies as a family member?
- Spouse
- Minor or incapacitated children who are dependent on the couple or one of the spouses.
- Minors adopted by the applicant (when not married) or the applicant’s spouse, based on a decision from the competent authority of the country of origin, recognized by Portugal, and provided that the country’s law grants adopted children rights and obligations equivalent to those of biological children.
- Adult children who are dependent on the couple or one of the spouses, unmarried, and studying at an educational institution in Portugal.
- Adult children who are dependent on the couple or one of the spouses, unmarried, and studying, if the holder of the family reunification right if the the residence permit was given through the Golden Visa Program
- Direct ascendants in the first degree (parents) of the resident or their spouse, if they are dependent on them.
- Minor siblings, provided they are under the guardianship of the resident, according to a decision from the competent authority of the country of origin, recognized by Portugal.
- In addition, family reunification can be authorized with a partner who maintains a de facto union with the resident foreign citizen, whether inside or outside the national territory, duly proven in accordance with the law.

What documents are necessary?
- Proof of the right to Family Reunification by a foreign citizen holding a Residence Permit, EU Blue Card, or Long-Term Resident Status.
- Properly authenticated evidence of the claimed family ties.
- Authenticated copies of the identification documents of the applicant’s family members.
- Proof of accommodation (not applicable to refugees).
- Proof of having sufficient means of subsistence to meet the needs of the family, as stipulated in Decree-Law No. 1563/2007, dated 11/12 (not applicable to refugees).
- Criminal record certificate issued by the competent authority of the country of nationality of the family member and the country where they have resided for more than one year (except for minors under 16 years old).
