The reality

The US Is One of Only Two Countries That Taxes Citizens on Worldwide Income

Moving to Portugal doesn't change that. As a US citizen or green card holder, you're still required to file with the IRS every year. Two countries, two tax systems, one income.

The questions pile up fast. US-Portugal treaty, FBAR, FATCA, IFICI, which country gets to tax what first, how to avoid paying twice on the same income. Most advisors only know one side. We have both a US tax specialist and a Portuguese tax attorney working together on your case.

Two services. Both sides covered.

Whether you need a one-off conversation or full filing for the year, both come with the same dual-specialist coordination.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The US taxes its citizens on worldwide income regardless of where they live. You must file a US federal return every year and may also have FBAR and FATCA reporting obligations.

You can, but they won't coordinate. The way income is classified in Portugal affects how it should be reported in the US, and vice versa. Without coordination, you risk overpaying, double reporting, or missing treaty benefits.

It's an agreement between the two countries that determines which country has the right to tax specific types of income and provides mechanisms to avoid double taxation. Applying it correctly to your specific situation is one of the main things our consultation covers.

FBAR (Foreign Bank Account Report) requires reporting if your foreign accounts exceed $10,000 at any point during the year. FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) requires reporting of foreign financial assets above certain thresholds. Penalties for non-compliance can be severe. Both are covered in our services.

IFICI can exempt your foreign income from Portuguese tax, but the US still taxes it. The interaction determines whether you can claim foreign tax credits, how income is classified, and what your effective tax rate ends up being. This is exactly what our joint consultation addresses.

State filings are not included in the standard combined filing service but can be added. Let us know your situation and we'll provide a quote.

Yes. Green card holders have the same US tax filing obligations as citizens.

Yes, at no extra cost, for both the Portuguese and US returns.

Not necessarily. There are IRS programmes for catching up on missed filings (such as the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures). We can advise you during the consultation and help you get compliant.
